Client: Atlanta Public Schools

Expand an 83-year-old elementary school with 6 haphazard additions into a middle school in an intown neighborhood of single-family bungalows.

Improve student safety and traffic flow at the beginning and end of school day.

Create a functional landmark for students, parents and neighbors.
Renovate and improve access to the 75-year-old auditorium for student activities and community meetings.

Respect the character of the original building and retain the existing courtyard garden.


Renovate existing building including the cafeteria and the kitchen.
Add new classrooms, new stage to existing gym and new media center.

Relocate staff offices, fine arts, science and math programs.
Expand existing K through 5th grade classrooms for 6th through 8th graders.

Re-organize classrooms and support functions in existing space using additions to create maximum space utilization and circulation.

Complement original building style with new exteriors in form and materials (patterned brick, stone trim and clay tile mansard).
Exploit steep hillside for multiple entries onto main floors.

Create Sun Dial Tower as a durable public landmark.
Relocate student drop-off from busy street to new cloistered entrance.
